Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies
I wasn't sure how the whole wheat flour would affect the cookies, but they turned out great! I think I love these even more than my standard recipe. The cookies were crisp on the edges and soft and chewy in the middle. The whole wheat flour added a slight nutty and wholesome flavor.
Josh wasn't home when I baked these, so I asked him to guess the "secret ingredient." He is not very good at this game, he was guessing everything but whole wheat flour. When I told him I used all whole wheat flour, he was surprised. The cookies are not dense or "healthy" tasting, they are just delicious:)
Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies
1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened to room temperature
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
1 T milk (I used skim)
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside.
- Using a mixer, cream the sugars with the softened butter for about two minutes.
- Add in the egg, vanilla, and milk. Mix until smooth.
- Slowly add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, with the mixer on low. Mix just until flour disappears. Don't over mix.
- Stir in the oats and chocolate chips by hand.
- Form rounded cookie dough balls, using about 1 T of dough. Place dough balls on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or a Silpat.
- Bake cookies for 11-12minutes or until lightly golden around the edges. Let cookies sit on the cookie sheet for a couple of minutes to set up. Then move to a cooking rack. Makes around 2 dozen cookies.

Josh has good taste - can't beat a classic cookie! :-D

it's always nice to get a little whole wheat into one's diet, and if that means an extra cookie or two, so be it. good for josh for having a suggestion at the ready--most guys in my life say "i don't know" or "i don't care." punks.
We love oatmeal cookies at our house too! I'll have to try your healthy version. My husband's favorite right now though is your white chocolate cranberry cookies!

Love using whole wheat flour on my cookies as well! It's surprising how they almost never taste "healthy", as you said!
Yum my fave! So glad they turned out so well with whole wheat.
Delish..does that mean I can eat 4 more if there is WW flour in them?? LOL

Just my time of cookies;I almost always use whole wheat in cookies and yours looks lovely.
Those look really yummy. Thanks for sharing.
I have been using ww flour with most of my baking lately and I love it. Your cookies look terrific.
YUM - definitely have to make these! How do you think they would do with quick-cooking steel-cut oats instead of rolled?
squuuuueal! my favorites!!! This looks really close to the recipe I use for oatmeal chocolate chip cookies - except I use applesauce in mine (which scared me at first!). I have been using a 50/50 ration of white & wheat flour, but I think I'll try going full wheat flour next time. HOORAY FOR THIS POST! :)
Wow these sound and look really tasty! I really need to buy some whole wheat flour!
before this post, i had every hour between now and bedtime accounted for. everything will be shifted to make these cookies, thank you very much.
i love whole wheat in cookies. it adds such a nice nutty flavor. these sound great!
I have so much WW flour that I need to use up. Seems like my freezer is full of it and my hubs was just complaining about it. Bet he wouldn't complain if I made these cookies! LOL
YUM. i need more cookies in my life :) preferably portion-controlled, though! haha
I bake with ww flour all the time and no one ever notices. And adding that to oatmeal is so great.
Mmmm, that looks like my kind of cookie!
I pretty much always use WW flour myself and I can't ever tell!
Great job you chem lab scientist :) I think WW flour is a great addition, and with the oats, you have a really fibertastic cookie there.
And Josh is a smart dude, your cookies are always a good choice!
How great that these are made with whole wheat! They look yummy!
Thanks everyone for your comments!
Kalyn-Great idea to use cocoa nibs. I will have to try those next time.
Carlson Twins-Thanks:)
Barbara-Glad your hubs loves those cookies, they are one of my favs too!
Leslie-eat as many as you want, I won't tell:)
CookiePie-I haven't tried steel cut oats, good idea though. I might have to make another batch:)
This recipe yields a smallish amount of dough...until you put the oatmeal + chchips in...then all is good with the world. First batch is in the oven!
p.s. promise of these cookies got jamie to do a couple of loads of laundry tonight...SCORE!
Leslie-I hope you like the cookies. I got about 2 dozen cookies when I made them. And props to you for getting Jamie to do the laundry:)
That's so funny..."not healthy tasting" :-] What a good idea - will be trying it next go around.
I always feel like I've won the lottery when I bake with whole wheat flour and oats. They give the best flavors and textures to baked goods! I'll be trying this combination for sure.
I'm so stoked that it worked with whole wheat! Basically, I now have a chocolate chip cookie recipe that is health food. I will be eating it accordingly :D
Yay for using whole wheat flour,, your cookies look super yummy! I always put oatmeal in my ccc too, it elevates them to a whole new level!
Yum! I always sub whole wheat flour for all purpose. I love it!
I love oaty biscuits like this with a passion!
That's great to know that the whole wheat flour doesnt turn them into one of those health cookies that some people don't like. They look delicious! :)
I wish I had someone to give me suggestions.
I love that Josh couldn't guess the secret ingredient... Sounds like my kind of recipe!
I love that you made these with whole wheat flour! I'm starring this recipe to give it a try. I bet my hubby can't tell, either. I love sneaking "healthy" ingredients into his food and seeing if he notices!

Very cool idea with the whole wheat! I am a chocolate chip fantastic so I will have to try them with the whole wheat and do a taste test of my own.
I am the exact same way, always wanting to do something different but hub always wants the same ol' thing; must be a guy thing.

Oh! These cookies look so delicious...love the idea of the ribbon around them :-)
I'll be making these soon. I'm always looking for good whole wheat cookie recipes.
We loved these cookies!! My husband was dreaming of them and was thrilled to see them when he got home. It was also the first time that I've used whole wheat flour and it was a winner! Thank you!!!
I love that you used all whole wheat flour and still got good results. I'm always a bit afraid to substitute entirely for fear of dense baked goods. I'll have to try these!
Love this recipe! Healthy, yet you can't tell! That is my favorite! Great idea!
Gotta love when you can make a cookie at least a little healthier!!
My husband never has suggestions for me. I've made ccc's with all whole wheat flour (recipe from the Everyday Food Storage Gals) and they are great. I loved the nuttiness from the wheat, too!
I'll have to try yours with the oats!
They look terrific! Definitely another cookie recipe to try soon!
I love cookies with whole wheat flour, it gives them such a great texture. Lucky Josh to have you cook these amazing cookies for him!
They sound wonderful!
I can't wait to try these, I have made a similar recipe only I changed out the butter for peanut butter and added a table spoon of ground flax. My husband loves them...okay so do I! They are so good with coffee.
These are delicious. Just a week ago, the Texan told me that putting whole wheat in chocolate chip cookies was akin to clubbing a baby seal. Graphic huh? So, of course, that made me go looking for a chocolate chip cookie recipe with whole wheat. I made these last night, using white whole wheat because that is what I had. He walked in the door said "cookies!!" with a big smile and promptly starting eating them. I can't decide how to break the news to him. (I made some with raisins for me-haven't figured out how to bring him around on those yet- I think they are my new fav cookie!) Thanks
