Homemade Yogurt

I love yogurt. I usually eat a six ounce serving every day. It is a great source of protein, calcium, and contains good bacteria for my tummy issues. We used to buy Oikos or Fage Greek yogurt, but it started to get expensive, so we started making our own.

I consulted my Twitter friends before getting started. Of course they were very helpful. Thanks everyone:) We decided to buy a yogurt maker from
Williams Sonoma. We still have wedding gift cards so it was free for us, score! I love this maker because it makes individual servings. My yogurt is all portioned out for a week. I know you can make yogurt without the maker, but we are really happy with ours:)

I was amazed at how easy it was to make yogurt. We use skim milk and either Oikos or Fage as the starter. Really, all you have to do is heat up the milk, let it cool, and then stir in the yogurt. Once that is done you just let it "sleep" in the yogurt maker for 10-12 hours. How easy is that?

It is SO good too! I make plain yogurt and eat it with fresh fruit and sometimes a drizzle of agave nectar. It is also good with
homemade granola. You can also use it to make smoothies, frozen yogurt, tzatziki sauce, etc.

I can't believe we waited so long to make our own yogurt. It is so easy and much cheaper to make at home! Give it a try!

Homemade Yogurt
(Printable Recipe)

42 ounces fresh milk, we use skim
6 0z. plain yogurt, we use Oikos or Fage Greek for our starter

1. Pour milk into a high-sided saucepan. Place a candy thermometer on the side of the pan. Heat the milk until it boils-180 degrees. This will take about 1-2 minutes. The milk will start to climb the side of the pan.

2. Remove pan from heat and allow the milk to cool to lukewarm-110 degrees. To speed up the process you can place the pan in cold water.

3. In a bowl, add the yogurt and stir in some of the milk. Whisk well. Make sure the yogurt is dissolved. Add the rest of the milk and whisk until smooth.

4. Pour the mixture into the jars of the yogurt maker. Follow the yogurt maker's instructions. We usually do ours so it rests overnight. It takes 10-12 hours. We do 12 so it is thicker.

5. When the yogurt is done resting, chill it in the fridge with the lids on the jars. The yogurt will stay good for 10 days.

Notes:
-You can use your homemade yogurt as the starter, but only once.
-If you want really thick yogurt you can strain it with a cheese cloth or you can use coffee filters.
-You can make flavored yogurt by adding honey, fruit, or jam, but we prefer plain. We jazz it up once it is made.

  1. I've considered making my own yogurt, but I don't eat it very often. I live in the cheese state, y'know! That's where I get my dairy :) It does look like a fun chemistry experiment though.

  11. Thanks for this post! I love Greek yogurt, but find it so pricey, as you mentioned. I've seen posts about making your own and I'm going to start doing it soon. I'm so glad you mentioned the yogurt maker. I know you can make it without it, but I think that is a good tool for the individual servings. It's going on my Christmas list! :)

  12. what a great idea Maria. I never did the math on how expensive it actually can be. I eat a lot of yogurt too and I always buy the ones that cost more of course.

  13. Hey there. What a pretty pic. I love yogurt too and eat it daily. I once had a maker from WS too but I had laughed that I needed a little yogurt to make yogurt so I never used it. This was years ago and I even called to see if that was a mistake. Hah.

  26. Yum! I started reading your post here and had to stop and go get me some yogurt from the fridge before I could finish. (I'm sure mine wasn't nearly as good, since it was just Dannon, but it did the trick.) How fun to make homemade! Could you then make frozen yogurt with it? (I'm all about that frozen stuff! ;)

  27. Katrina-Yes, you can make frozen yogurt. Just churn it up. You can add in fruit, honey, and other mix ins.

  28. I can't wait to try making my own yogurt (without the machine though)

  29. Congrats on your new yogurt maker! I make my own too, just using a bit from the last batch for each new batch. It is really helpful for hubby's tummy, and tasty too!
I heat my milk up in my small crock pot, on high with the lid on and a thermometer with a wire in it. That way it just beeps to let me know when it has come to temp. I am all about the easy!

  30. Oh how I love my yogurt maker...which I hardly ever use. Life is just a little ahead of me in that area right now. Once things are more stable, I'll be making it again regularly...there really is no comparison.

  34. Your yogurt looks wonderful!

We go through homemade yogurt so fast that sometimes I get sick of keeping up with it, ha! (Which is why we don't have any right now). I've never actually used a yogurt maker, is it much easier than doing it the old fashioned way?

  35. To Leslie and Lesley-I really like using the yogurt maker. I know it is a little bit of an investment, but it will pay for itself in no time. I have never made it without a maker, but I know you can. Leslie-I will send you a recipe. I just like how easy the maker is and I like how it portions out my servings for a week!

  36. I've never made yogurt with a yogurt maker. I make it on the stovetop with a thermometer, then "cook" it on a heating pad. It's way cheap, but it works. Using a cooker sounds much easier.

  51. The more and more people successfully make their own yogurt, the fewer excuses I have for not trying it. I'm sure it's sooooo good, and it's so economical!

If you want to make pretty much the most amazing spread ever. Take your homemade yogurt and place into a piece of cheesecloth over night and let it drip out. It turns into a cream cheese spread. Add salt and spread away. It's divine.
